Jelly Babies
Launched in Sheffield by Bassett's in 1919 and originally known as "Peace Babies" to mark the end of World War I. Production was suspended during World War II due to wartime shortages and the fact that the name had more or less become ironic. In the 50's the product was relaunched as "Jelly Babies". In March 1989 Bassett's were taken over by Cadbury Schweppes who, in turn had recently taken over Trebor . Jelly Babies made in Britain are usually dusted in a starch powder left over from the moulding process whereas those produced elsewhere, notably Europe, tend to be glossy.
